The Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) team recently submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations for funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

The hub will help the DOE achieve the Biden Administration’s goal of a 100 percent clean electrical grid by 2035 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

A major component of the hub’s application is its Community Benefits Plan identifying strategies it will use to engage with the communities throughout the Appalachian region. ARCH2 is a community-first hub designed to ensure project area communities have input and opportunities.

Grant awards will be announced this autumn.

ARCH2 was formed by Allegheny Science & Technology, an energy technology consulting firm; Battelle, a company serving the national security, health and life sciences, and energy and environmental industries; EQT Corp., a natural gas production company; GTI Energy a research and training organization; and the West Virginia state government. Its strategic partners and stakeholders include private sector industry leaders, utilities, universities, non-profit organizations, and transportation and state entities from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky.

ARCH2 is concentrated in Appalachian counties as defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
