Alcoa, a bauxite, alumina, and aluminum products provider, recently announced it is expanding its EcoSource low-carbon alumina brand to include certain grades of non-metallurgical alumina.
“Alcoa is the world’s largest producer of non-metallurgical alumina outside of China, and we’re excited to expand our EcoSource brand to more customers as an important evolution in our product portfolio,” said Kelly Thomas, Alcoa executive vice president and chief commercial officer. “We are offering solutions today to help our customers reduce their emissions and meet their own sustainability goals.”
The brand launched in 2020 for smelter-grade applications. It will now be offered in non-metallurgical grades such as calcined materials and hydrates. Calcined materials are used to manufacture ceramic tiles, glass, and flame retardants. Hydrates are used in municipal water treatment applications.
EcoSource is sourced from Alcoa’s global refining system and is part of Alcoa’s Sustana line. The Sustana brand includes alumina, primary aluminum, and aluminum with recycled content.
The other products in the line include EcoDura aluminum, made with a minimum of 50 percent recycled content, and EcoLum low-carbon aluminum, with less than 4.0 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent for every ton of metal produced. Both can be supplied with certification from the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.
