Pittsburgh-based PPG announced this week it would be expanding its production capacity at two of its plants based in San Juan del Rio, Mexico, and Temple, Texas.

PPG said it will invest $11 million to double the production capacity of its powder coatings plant in San Juan del Rio. The expansion is expected to be completed by mid-2023 and will allow the plant to meet future demand needs for powder coatings in Mexico.

“With this investment, the plant will have new, state-of-the-art manufacturing technology, enhancing production practices and process flow,” said Guillermo Peña, PPG director of Industrial Coatings, Mexico. “It will further improve the plant’s productivity and benefit our customers with improved service levels and faster response.”

The project will involve the installation of new production lines, as well as upgrades to existing equipment and increased application capabilities. The production increase will also allow PPG to manufacture new powder coating products that are currently supplied from the United States at the local plant.

“This expansion reaffirms PPG’s confidence in Mexico and the strategic role of the San Juan del Rio site for the powder coatings business,” said Kevin Braun, PPG vice president of global Industrial Coatings. “Powder coating technology is becoming a more functional and profitable option for many customers due to its superior protection, sustainable qualities, and higher transfer efficiency compared to liquid coating technology.”

In Temple, Texas, the company said it will invest $9 million to expand its adhesives and sealants line. Pending final negotiations with Temple Economic Development Corporations (Temple EDC), the City of Temple and Bell County, the expansion is expected to create 12 jobs.

“We are pleased to continue working with PPG as they advance their business operations in Temple, Texas,” said Adrian Cannady, president and CEO of Temple EDC. “The company has found great success in our community, and we look forward to the opportunities this continued growth will bring to our residents.”

PPG’s Temple plant manufactures the company’s Liquid Nails and Mulco products, leading adhesives in the construction industry. In 2020, the facility produced approximately 48 million tubes of Liquid Nails. The plant ships to major U.S. and Canadian retailers like The Home Depot, Lowe’s Home Improvement, Menards and PPG Paints stores.

“Our expanded partnership with Temple EDC is not only an investment in the community of Temple, Texas, creating new jobs in the area, but also an extension of our adhesives and sealants line, products that our professional (“Pro”) customers rely on to complete many of their jobs,” said Scott Bartlett, PPG vice president of Operations, Global Architectural Coatings. “We look forward to continuing to partner with Temple EDC to better service the Pro and drive growth for both organizations.”
