Yardley-based Crown Holdings, Inc. announced Tuesday it is constructing a second high-speed line at its Parma, Italy, aluminum beverage can facility.

The company said the additional capacity will help meet growing demand in Italy and surrounding markets and produce an estimated one billion cans annually starting in the first quarter of 2023.

According to the company, the demand surrounding aluminum cans in Italy is growing as aluminum becomes the preferred packaging option for beverages due to its capacity for infinite recyclability. As a result, the company has seen accelerated growth in the aluminum can market.

The new line will provide beverage containers for the carbonated soft drink, sparkling water, beer, and wine segments of the market.

Crown Holdings said the expansion would result in an additional 80 jobs at the Parma plant. The first line in Parma started in early 2019.

A leader in metal packaging technology, Crown operates facilities in 47 countries with more than 33,000 employees. The company’s annual net sales top $11.6 billion. It is the number two producer of beverage cans in the world. It also provides packaging for food, general industrial products, health and beauty products, household and industrial items, luxury goods, metals, and promotional items.

Started in Baltimore in 1892, the company moved its headquarters to Philadelphia in 1958 and finally to Yardley in 2018.
