Alcoa announces plans to increase production at Norwegian smelter

Alcoa Corp. recently announced it will increase production capacity at its Mosjøen smelter in Norway from 200,000 to 214,000 metric tons per year by the end of 2026.

The $51 million project will increase amperage to the site’s two potlines by improving the electrical infrastructure. This also will improve the site’s anode production processes.

The smelter is fully powered by renewable energy and produces rolling ingots and foundry alloys. The increased capacity will allow Alcoa to meet the needs of customers who want high-quality, low-carbon aluminum.

The facility produces EcoDura aluminum, which includes at least 50 percent recycled content, and EcoLum aluminum, which offers less than four metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from bauxite mining, alumina refining, and aluminum smelting and casting.

“We continue to build on our positive history of increasing the capabilities and output of our existing assets through process improvements and capital investments,” said John Slaven, Alcoa executive vice president and COO. “Mosjøen is already a top-performing asset in Alcoa’s global system, and this investment reflects its operational excellence, the dedication of our employees, and the strong support from our many customers and community stakeholders.”

Alcoa has invested approximately $50 million in projects at the location.
