Butler Health System and Excela Health recently agreed to combine into a new health system serving western Pennsylvania.

The new health system will support five hospitals, employ more than 1,000 physicians and practitioners, employ approximately 7,300 others, and generate more than $1 billion in revenue.

Butler Health System is comprised of Butler Memorial Hospital, Clarion Hospital, and more than 70 outpatient locations.

Excela Health is comprised of Excela Westmoreland Hospital, Excela Latrobe Hospital, and Excela Frick Hospital.

“The new system will provide additional services and better access to those services,” Ken DeFurio, Butler Health System president and CEO, said. “We are pleased that this partnership amplifies our ability to provide tertiary care yet remain physician-led and community focused.”

“We believe strongly that our new partnership will extend our intellectual and financial capital,” Excela CEO John Sphon said. “In doing so, we can enhance access to care, decrease the cost of care, and continue to focus on providing improved experiences and outcomes for patients.”

DeFurio and Sphon said their organizations are culturally aligned and share a vision for national and regional industry transformation.

Specific details about the health system, including its name and leadership, have yet to be decided.

The merger requires regulatory approval and final board approvals.
