The Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) recently awarded Apprentice Training for the Electrical Industry (ATEI) $296,936 through the state’s Pre-Apprentice and Apprenticeship Grant Program.

“Apprentice Training for the Electrical Industry is very excited to be awarded this grant from DCED,” Michael Neill, Apprentice Training director, said. “Among other attributes, the grant allows us to add cutting-edge technology in the form of computer-aided-design curriculum to our most advanced apprentices. This knowledge positions individual workers for optimal electrical trades opportunities and translates to a better skilled workforce for the Philadelphia region’s electrical employers. We are committed to training Pennsylvania’s workers for the green jobs of tomorrow with the very latest technology of today.”

ATEI will use the funds to train 30 electrical apprentices in Building Information Modeling concepts. ATEI offers a five-year apprenticeship program. This training will be provided to fifth-year apprentices.

During their five years of training, apprentices study concepts mandated by the electrical industry trade standards, including DC theory, AC theory, grounding and bonding, electrical code calculations, fiber optics, lighting essentials, code standards and practices, conduit fabrication, electronic access control, and motors and motor control.

The Pre-Apprentice and Apprenticeship Program aims to increase apprenticeship availability to employers to assist them with talent recruitment and development.
