The Manufacturing PA initiative recently awarded $2.3 million in grants to 36 student research projects at 17 universities statewide.

The initiative fosters collaboration and partnerships to accelerate technology advancement, encourage innovation and commercialization, and build a modern workforce. Local manufacturing companies partner with universities.

This round of funding is through Manufacturing PA’s fellowship program. The fellowship, founded in 2018, was developed in collaboration with industrial resource centers, manufacturers, and Pennsylvania’s seven research institutions. It has granted $9.8 million to 409 students.

The fellowship pairs graduate and undergraduate students with local manufacturers. The students then pursue research projects to develop new technologies and advance innovation.

Universities that partner with a manufacturer can apply for funding for specific student research projects. Grants are awarded between $25,000 and $70,000.

“Pennsylvania’s manufacturing industry has seen continued growth and innovation, and I am amazed at the work these students and companies do,” Gov. Tom Wolf said. “My administration continues to be committed to providing funding to students involved in this important industry. I am proud to fund these 36 projects and look forward to seeing what they create.”

The projects will help advance innovation in several manufacturing sectors, including autonomous navigation, waste sustainability, and 3D printing.
