Pennsylvanians have until Jan. 15 to enroll in health insurance exchange

Pennsylvanians have until Jan. 15 to sign up on Pennie and other state-based and federal insurance marketplace exchanges to obtain health insurance coverage for 2022.

Coverage for new enrollees begins Feb. 1.

“The historic 13.6 million people who have enrolled in a health insurance plan so far this period shows that the demand and need for affordable health care remains high,” Xavier Becerra, state Health and Human Services secretary, said in a statement.

Currently, approximately 344,000 Pennsylvanians are enrolled through Pennie. The majority qualify for subsidies to reduce the cost of coverage, state officials said. Nationwide, more than 90 percent of consumers have received federal subsidies to cover the cost of care.

Those who plan to re-enroll in their current coverage plan are also encouraged to visit the marketplace during open enrollment. Plans and subsidies can change from year to year. Individual coverage premiums increased 0.2 percent in Pennsylvania from 2021.

Nationwide, 213 issuers are offering coverage through the federal marketplace, 32 more issuers than last year, and in Pennsylvania, 25 counties have a new insurer on the marketplace for 2022
