Pittsburgh-based Highmark and CareFirst of Maryland, both Blue Cross Blue Shield Association independent licensees, recently partnered to offer health insurance designed for labor unions and members.

Union Blue will provide nationally recognized services at a local level with access to more than 1.7 million providers and simplicity to improve the overall customer experience. Registered nurses will provide personalized assistance, and members will have access to a team of service advocates nationwide.

An integrated data platform will allow for seamless coordination and care management.

“We’re excited to work with CareFirst to build a solution that draws on our deep experience and is tailored to the unique needs of this market,” Deborah L. Rice-Johnson, Highmark president and chief growth officer, said. “We’ve built a robust foundation of service and member experience for Union Blue to identify and manage a range of individual health conditions across a diverse population. As a result, we’re enabling multiple touchpoints for members to help lead to positive health outcomes.”

Union Blue will be available next year.

Highmark provides health insurance administration services to more than 6 million members in Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia and New York.

CareFirst offers health insurance products and administrative services to 3.5 million people in Maryland, the District of Columbia and Virginia.
