CANPACK Group, a global manufacturer of environmentally friendly packaging solutions, announced Tuesday plans to open its first U.S. facility in Olyphant Borough in Lackawanna County.

The company is in the process of redeveloping a former brownfield site and will build a 908,000-square-foot aluminum can manufacturing facility and North American Center of Excellence.

Nearly $366 million will be invested in the project, and it is expected to create approximately 400 jobs.

CANPACK has four divisions: beverage cans, metal closures, glass packaging, and food and industrial packaging.

UGI Utilities, a natural gas and electric utility serving 45 counties in Pennsylvania, installed 200 feet of 8-inch high-density polyethylene pipe and associated meter equipment to provide the facility with natural gas service.

“It was exciting to work with the CANPACK team on this project,” Joe Bauman, UGI relationship manager, said. “Our communities and economy enjoy many benefits as a result of UGI adding new large customers like CANPACK.“

The facility is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

CANPACK Group is part of Giorgi Global Holdings and has been expanding its global presence. CANPACK SA in Poland is CANPACK Group’s main entity.

CANPACK SA, which produces aluminum beverage cans, recently joined the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.
