PPG recently announced it is expanding its European coatings manufacturing capacity for packaging applications.

The company plans to invest an undisclosed amount in sites in The Netherlands and Poland that will support an increase in demand for aluminum and steel cans used in beverage, food, and personal care packaging.

The Tiel, The Netherlands, plant will increase capacity by 30 percent for PPG INNOVEL non-BPA internal coatings used in beverage cans. This follows a 50 percent expansion last year.

In addition, capacity will double for PPG iSENSE external coatings used for the exterior of beverage and personal care cans.

The Cieszyn, Poland, plant will double capacity for the PPG NUTRISHIELD line of non-BPA, internal, food can coatings.

Both projects will be completed by the end of the year.

“These investments demonstrate our long-term commitment to support our packaging customers across Europe and beyond,” Alessandro Borzino, PPG general manager, packaging coatings, Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said. “They will improve our ability to efficiently supply the innovative coatings solutions that canmakers and brands trust.”

In 2020, PPG doubled capacity at its Bodelshausen, Germany, facility for packaging coatings. Research and development at the site were also expanded.

PPG operates in more than 70 countries, with net sales totaling $13.8 billion.
