A bipartisan group of 21 state senators recently sent a letter to Gov. Tom Wolf asking that he repeal COVID-related restrictions on employers before the start of the Memorial Day weekend.

Wolf plans to lift restrictions on Memorial Day, but the senators request this date be changed to May 28. The change would allow employers to have the full holiday weekend to begin recuperating from the losses they suffered during the pandemic.

The senators contend that the restrictions have devastated many employers and industries and, therefore, it is encouraging businesses will be able to move toward a more normal situation.

“As we look forward toward a brighter future, we must also acknowledge how much damage these restrictions have caused, as well as the pressing need to give these employers a boost to ensure their long-term survival,” the letter said. “Accordingly, we are requesting that you move up the timeline for these restrictions to be eliminated by three days – from Memorial Day to the Friday before Memorial Day.”

People will be spending money on Memorial Day weekend, state Sen. Scott Martin (R-Lancaster County) said, and he’d rather people spent money in Pennsylvania.

“I don’t see any issue with the science or the data that would prohibit reopening these employers two days earlier,” Martin said.
