Oil and gas company seeking independent certification

Northeast Natural Energy (NNE), a West Virginia-based oil and gas company operating near Pennsylvania’s southwest border, recently announced it would use continuous emissions monitoring technology to help achieve independent certification of natural gas production under the MiQ methane standard.

MiQ certification means methane emissions attribute to a specified portion of natural gas production. Companies are graded on an A-F scale based on methane intensity, company practices, and methane detection technology deployment.

The company also is seeking certification from Equitable Origin. The EO100 Standard for Responsible Energy Development covers a broad range of environmental, social, and governance criteria.

If it achieves certification, NNE will be the first private equity backed natural gas company to certify its entire field through both organizations.

NNE will use the LUMEN Terrain from Avitas to monitor natural gas production facilities.

“Our team has always focused on operating with the highest environmental standards in the industry, and we have been exploring new technologies and certifications for several months,” Northeast Natural Energy CEO Mike John said. “We are eager to be the first company in the Marcellus to use the Avitas continuous monitoring system to complement the certification processes of Equitable Origin and MiQ.”
