The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) recently awarded three European facilities operated by Alcoa Corp. with Performance Standard certifications.

The facilities are the San Ciprián refinery in Spain, the Lista smelter in Norway, and the Fjarðaál smelter in Iceland.

“Alcoa has a strategic priority to advance sustainably, which includes financial, environmental, and social outcomes, and our progress toward validating responsible production is a reflection of our commitment,” Rosa García Pineiro, Alcoa vice president of sustainability, said. “We congratulate our employees at these European locations for their work in earning this certification and operating with excellence.”

This brings the number of Alcoa facilities earning Performance Standard certifications to 13 sites. They include three bauxite mines, five alumina refineries, and five aluminum smelters and cast houses.

In addition, ASI recently expanded the number of Alcoa sites covered by ASI’s Chain of Custody standard. The standard applies to the responsible production, sourcing, and stewardship of aluminum and allows companies to market products with ASI’s certification.

All of Alcoa’s bauxite mines in Western Australia and Brazil are covered by the standard, as are all of the alumina refineries in Western Australia, the Alumar refinery in Brazil, and the aluminum smelters and cast houses at Mosjøen and Lista in Norway, Baie-Comeau in Canada, and Fjarðaál in Iceland.
