The Regional Industrial Development Corp. (RIDC) recently received $300,000 through the Industrial Sites Reuse Program to perform environmental remediation on the three main bay cranes at Mill 19 in Pittsburgh.

Mill 19 is a 265,000-square-foot complex on the 178-acre Hazelwood Green site. The site formerly was used for steel production, and the mill is one of three remaining structures used for steel production. The cranes contain lead-based paint and some asbestos-containing materials.

The RIDC will provide an additional $100,000, and funds will be used to conduct asbestos and lead-based paint remediation on all three large cranes surfaces.

“This property was shuttered and left vacant with the collapse of the steel industry, and these investments now allow for renovations to ensure a safe and updated property equipped for new opportunity,” Gov. Tom Wolf said.

Once the site is remediated, it will contain lab and workshop space, flex office space, and a ground-floor garage. Two buildings have already been constructed, and one is in the planning stage.

One building will house Carnegie Melon University’s Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute and its Manufacturing Futures Initiative. The second building will house a corporate research and development center for a global technology company.
