Harrisburg launches shop local campaign

Harrisburg is preparing to launch a campaign aimed at encouraging the municipal government, businesses, and residents to shop locally for products and services.

The Choose Harrisburg campaign will run from Aug. 3 to Aug. 28 and will focus on encouraging purchasing for, contracting with, and dining at local businesses as well as investing in local entrepreneurs.

“A sustainable shift in where consumers are spending can provide a significant long-term boost to Harrisburg’s economy,” Jamal Jones, director of business development, said. “Our goal for the campaign is that businesses experience noticeable sales and revenue growth as a result of the increased visibility.”

Businesses interested in participating in the campaign must register before Aug. 1. To be eligible, businesses must meet four criteria: be located within city limits, have 50 or fewer employees, be locally owned and controlled, and have obtained the 2020 Business Privilege and Mercantile License.

Each participating business will be included in a weekly email digest delivered to newsletter subscribers and will be listed on the city’s website for the duration of the campaign.  Each business will have its logo and contact information featured on the website.

“This is a wonderful initiative to support our small independent and diverse businesses here in the City,” said Harrisburg Mayor Eric Papenfuse. “By working together and spending local, we can all do our part to build an even brighter and stronger Harrisburg.”
