House resolution would end COVID-19 business shutdown

House Republicans recently passed a resolution that would end the business shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The businesses were closed March 17 by Gov. Tom Wolf’s emergency declaration. There was a waiver process instituted to allow certain businesses to remain operating, but it was riddled with problems. Businesses were both approved and denied, while some approved businesses had waivers revoked without explanation.

In addition to reverse the closure order, the resolution 836 ensures nursing homes and long-term care facilities receive more assistance.

The resolution does not reverse the emergency declaration.

“From the beginning of this process, Gov. Tom Wolf’s business shutdown order has been arbitrary, frustrating, and destructive to family-owned small businesses that have been cornerstones in communities across our state,” House Majority Leader Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) said. “Since this process began, the voices of Pennsylvanians have been loud and clear. They want the opportunity to operate safely under our current circumstances, just as Gov. Wolf has allowed so many businesses to do. This resolution does just that.”

The House voted to allow certain segments the economy to reopen, Cutler said, and Wolf has agreed. Wolf knows businesses can operate safely, Cutler said.

The resolution moves to the Senate for its consideration.
