A coalition of unions, business, and civic leaders recently launched Pittsburgh Works Together, an organization that will advocate for workers and families in traditional energy and manufacturing industries.
The organization also will advocate for an economy that combines traditional industries with emerging technology.
Jeff Nobers, Builders Guild of Western Pennsylvania executive director, will serve as the new group leader. It will be co-chaired by Tom Melcher, Greater Pittsburgh Building Trades Council business manager, and Morgan O’Brien, Peoples Natural Gas president and CEO. The council represents 17 unions in the trades and construction industry.
“We have tremendous opportunities ahead by working together and supporting major capital investments in state of the art technology and innovation in our traditional industries, while at the same time developing and building out an infrastructure across our region for emerging industries, such as solar and electric vehicles,” Nobers said at a press conference and rally at the Senator John Heinz History Center.
Also attending the event were Scott Buckiso, U.S. Steel’s chief manufacturing officer; Earl Buford, Partner4Work CEO, a regional workforce development agency; and Nick DeIuliis, CNX Energy president and CEO.
In addition to speakers, the event also featured two videos. One was about the organization’s goal for an inclusive economy, while the second including testimonials from union workers.
