The Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority (EMTA) was recently awarded a $2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DoT) to upgrade the city’s public transportation system.
EMTA will use the funds to upgrade its bus fleet and add new compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, expand transportation to popular locations, and improve mobility options in urban and rural areas.
“The staff at EMTA would like to thank all federal, state, and local officials for their tremendous support to obtain this grant,” Jeremy Peterson, CEO of Erie Metropolitan Transit Authority, said. “The grant funds will enable EMTA to acquire additional CNG buses as we continue to grow and always provide safe, convenient, and reliable transportation to the Erie community.”
The grant is part of the Federal Transit Administration’s Bus and Bus Facilities Program.
Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) wrote in support of the EMTA receiving the award in June.
“Updating and expanding public transportation in Erie is a laudable goal that will make travel in the city easier,” Toomey said. “The funds awarded by DoT will certainly help in these efforts. I was pleased to support Erie’s application to DoT and look forward to reviewing the progress of this important project.”
