Pittsburgh International sees growth for past 36 months

Pittsburgh International Airport saw passenger traffic increase 3 percent in April, the 36th consecutive month of year-over-year passenger growth, marking the longest streak of passenger growth since 1986.

Pittsburgh International saw 805,299 passengers in April, which was less than March’s 837,561 passengers but represented a larger year-to-year increase.

The total available seats for April grew 4.9 percent. There were more than 18,000 available seats with 184 weekday departures on nonstop routes.

The airport is home to 16 carriers and serves more than 9 million passengers annually. It offers nonstop service to 63 airports worldwide.

Ultra-low cost carriers are approximately 11 percent of traffic at the airport.

In April, the airport began offering year-round service to London-Heathrow. Last month, Allegiant Air launched nonstop service to Knoxville, Tenn., and Delta Air Lines is adding daily direct service to Raleigh/Durham, N. C., this month. Also last month, Via Airlines canceled plans for service to Birmingham, Ala., Hartford, Conn., and Memphis, Tenn.

The carrier was unable to recruiting, training and retaining a suitable level of qualified crews, Via Airlines said.

Pittsburgh has not had service to Birmingham since 2003, Memphis since 2014, or Hartford since last year.

Allegheny County Airport Authority manages the Pittsburgh International Airport and the Allegheny County Airport.
