Montgomery County recently launched a registered apprenticeship program for K-12 public school teachers.

The program, the first in the United States, will help teachers further develop their skills and better prepare students for careers.

Choice Careers sponsors the Apprenticeship to Mastery Program for Public School Teachers program and approved by the Department of Labor & Industry’s Apprenticeship and Training Office.

The two-year nontraditional apprenticeship program will provide structured on-the-job training with Norristown Area School District. In the summer, it will provide training with local businesses.

Additional training will be provided by Choice Careers workshops and Educational Impact online training. Gwynedd Mercy University will offer accelerated online courses toward a Master of Science degree in Education.

“We are very excited to roll out the nation’s first registered apprenticeship program for K-12 public school teachers with the Norristown Area School District and Gwynedd Mercy University as our partners,” Clara Console, Choice Careers CEO and owner, said. “Education, academia and businesses must work together to better prepare teachers to meet the needs of their diverse classrooms and to solve the growing skills gap.”

Gov. Tom Wolf proposes investing an additional $10 million for PAsmart, a program that provides career and technical education for adults.
