Kennametal, Carnegie Mellon establish partnership

Latrobe based Kennametal, a tooling and industrial materials supplier, recently formed a partnership with Carnegie Mellon University through the Manufacturing PA Initiative fellowship program.

The program connects manufacturers with university students for the purpose of research projects aimed at developing new technologies and promoting innovation.

Carnegie Mellon is one of eight universities participating in the program.

“These partnerships are a win-win for everyone involved,” state Rep. Joe Petrarca (D-Westmoreland/Armstrong/Indiana) said. “Kennametal benefits through the students’ research in technology and innovation, and students gain valuable, hands-on experience, with the goal of this experience leading to a successful career in the manufacturing industry.”

Sixteen additional projects were announced. They involve the aerospace, advanced medical and steel production sectors.

Projects include the additive fabrication of bronze and tungsten carbide, the development of a reusable water filter and designing nano-scale implants for optimizing bone growth.

Earlier this month, Kennametal employees Amy Morissette and Luanne Overstreet learned they will be receiving Women in Manufacturing STEP Ahead Awards, presented by The Manufacturing Institute, April 11 in Washington, D.C.

Morissette is the company’s global environmental health and safety manager and Overstreet is the supply chain process manager.

The awards honor women in science, technology, engineering and production careers.
