The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) said last week that regional rail service will be returning to Coatesville.

The proposed new rail line would extend from the current terminal in Thorndale to a new station in Coatesville. Service would begin within approximately three years of the start of construction on the station. Construction will be completed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The Chester County Commissioners will be investing $1 million for the construction of the station’s parking garage.

“Each train coming into the new station will bring with it developments and businesses offering more jobs and more opportunities,” Commissioner Kathi Cozzone said. “And each train leaving the new station will give access to regional jobs and greater economic opportunities for those living in Coatesville. A restored regional rail service will go a long way in restoring Coatesville’s strength.”

Rail service was discontinued in 1996, but since 2000 the city’s population has grown 20 percent.

Residents have been requesting the return of rail service for years, Rep. Dan Williams (D-Chester) said.

Williams said he will work with transportation officials and the governments of Coatesville and Chester County to complete the project as soon as possible and extend the rail line to Parkesburg.
