Five Pennsylvania locations made the American Transportation Research Institute’s (ATRI) top 100 most congested bottlenecks for trucks in the United States.
The locations are I-76 at I-676 in Philadelphia, I-81 at I-83 in Harrisburg, I-476 at I-95 in Philadelphia, I-76 at I-476 in Philadelphia and Route 581 at I-83 in Harrisburg.
The 2019 Top Truck Bottleneck List was the result of ATRI evaluating 300 locations on the national highway system for their level of truck-oriented congestion.
ATRI analyzed GPS data from nearly 1 million heavy-duty trucks to produce a congestion impact ranking for each location.
“The Keystone State depends on trucking to deliver the goods – everything from the food we eat to the clothes we wear and the fuel we put in our cars,” Kevin Stewart, Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association president & CEO, said. “Unfortunately, growing congestion impacts our ability to meet the demands of Pennsylvania’s citizens. Using ATRI’s bottleneck analysis, we can target infrastructure investment to those areas most affected by congestion.”
ATRI has been issuing the annual list since 2002. The information is used to decide where infrastructure investments should be made and at what level.
The country’s worst bottleneck is I-95 at State Route 4 in Fort Lee, NJ.
