The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently announced that it accepted requests for modifications to permits for parts of the Mariner East 2 pipeline for two sites in West Whiteland Township, Chester County.
Sunoco Pipeline, LP (SPLP) submitted requests for modifications to Chapter 102 (Erosion and Sediment Control) and Chapter 105 (Water Obstructions and Encroachments) permits after re-evaluating its initial plan to conduct Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD).
SPLP has proposed changing methodology from HDD to conventional bore for one drill site and from HDD to a combination of conventional bore, open trench, and HDD for the other drill site. The changes in methodology are expected to avoid potential impacts to a public water supply well, other water resources and sensitive areas.
“These approvals have undergone substantial and thorough reviews by technical staff, with careful consideration given to the significant public input received during the extended comment period and public hearing held this past spring,” DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell said.
