Kraft Heinz announces expanded packaging sustainability commitments

The Kraft Heinz Company, which is co-headquartered in Pittsburgh and Chicago, recently announced expansions to its environmental commitments including goals for packaging sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

Kraft Heinz set a target to make 100 percent of its packaging globally recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. It plans to pursue technical alternatives and partner with third-parties for consulting, tracking and other specialist packaging services. The company will also work to increase the use of recycled content in its packaging and decrease the volume of packaging used.

“Our collective industry has a massive challenge ahead of us with respect to packaging recyclability, end-of-life recovery and single-use plastics,” Kraft Heinz CEO Bernardo Hees said. “Even though we don’t yet have all the answers, we owe it to current and future generations who call this planet ‘home’ to find better packaging solutions and actively progress efforts to improve recycling rates. That’s why Kraft Heinz is placing heightened focus on this important environmental issue.”

The announcement complements the company’s Growing a Better World strategy released in last year’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Report. Kraft Heinz plans to further outline its strategy and timeline for achieving its packaging commitment in its next CSR Report, which it will issue in 2019.

The company also plans to announce new science-based goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in its supply chain when their current commitments expire in 2020.
