Allegheny Health Network plans to invest $43 million to renovate Allegheny General Hospital’s (AGH) emergency department and expand it by 36,000-square-feet.
The Level 1 trauma center treats more than 40,000 patients annually through its emergency department. The multi-phased project will allow the hospital to provide the highest level of care.
“A critical component of the AGH emergency department redesign is improving efficiency so we can provide better, faster care to more patients,” Dr. Bobby Kapur, AHN emergency medicine chairman, said. “This enhanced capability allows us to better serve our community, accept more critical transfers from other area hospitals and ensure those needing the most advanced care promptly receive it.”
The expanded emergency room will have 57 treatment rooms; new waiting, triage and care initiation rooms; a relocated entrance; a centralized security station; a larger X-ray room; several equipment alcoves; and six trauma bays. The trauma and resuscitation rooms will be relocated and expanded.
The project will be conducted in five stages and is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The first phase is expected to be completed during the third quarter.
The expansion is part of a plan to renovate the entire AGH campus over the next decade.
