Pittsburgh-based PGT Trucking, Inc. announced Wednesday they had established the first dedicated transportation service using Class 8 zero-emission equipment.
The route to Pittsburgh’s Steel Dynamics is the first in the flatbed industry, PGT said, and will serve as a step forward in PGT’s commitment to sustainable and efficient transportation solutions.
“PGT Trucking is extremely proud to have successfully launched our first dedicated run for Steel Dynamics using Nikola’s Class 8 battery-electric vehicle,” PGT Trucking President Gregg Troian said. “We are committed to providing our customers with innovative and sustainable transportation solutions, and this service offering will lead to a greener future for both the trucking and steel industries.”
Both PGT and Steel Dynamics said that environmental sustainability is one of their key focuses, and that the partnership between the two allows PGT to transport Steel Dynamics products in an efficient manner while minimizing the companies’ environmental impact. The short-haul dedicated route will reduce PGT’s carbon emissions by more than 105,000 pounds annually. To support the route, Steel Dynamics will install a charging station at their MetalTech location for PGT’s battery-electric truck.
“Our entrepreneurial, innovative teams support our decarbonization efforts through identifying and implementing emission reduction projects throughout our organization,” stated Jeff Hansen, Steel Dynamics Vice President Environmental Sustainability. “Working as a team, we will achieve our decarbonization goals.”
PGT said its goal is to reach a 35 percent reduction in emissions of its company-owned equipment by 2025.
