The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently completed its environmental assessment and concluded the benefits of the proposed Chrin Landfill expansion outweighs the harmful effects.

Benefits include host fees to Williams Township that would be used for roadway maintenance, free waste and recycling services, and local employment.  Negative effects include litter, an increase in traffic, and a decrease in air and water quality.

“DEP diligently reviewed the application to make sure the benefits to the community regarding this expansion are evident and carried out,” Mike Bedrin, DEP Northeast regional office director, said. “A project of this size has to show that resident will see minimal impacts.”

Chrin filed an application with DEP in 2015 for its plan to expand by approximately 32 acres.  The expansion area would be located within the current landfill’s permit boundary and would allow the landfill to continue operating for eight additional years, Chrin said.

Expansion would include a new disposal area to the east of the current landfill and an overlay on the existing disposal area. The landfill’s height would increase 30-40 feet.

The application moves to the technical review phase.  Public comments can be submitted until April 29.

Chrin is located in Northampton County.
