Aurora Innovation, a self-driving technology company, and Sweden-based Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.), an autonomous transport solutions company, recently expanded their autonomous freight network to include a 200-mile route between Dallas and Oklahoma City.
Currently, the Oklahoma City program supports trips five days a week in supervised autonomy. The expansion will allow V.A.S. to begin hauling freight directly to customer facilities in Oklahoma City, reducing the need for drayage moves and additional handoffs.
Aurora Driver, Aurora Innovation’s self-driving system integrates with the Volvo VNL Autonomous, a production-ready autonomous truck.
“Leveraging our technology to open new routes quickly and efficiently is a core part of our strategy,” Ossa Fisher, Aurora president, said. “Aurora and Volvo are firing on all cylinders and our ability to execute together at scale is clear. As Volvo’s most advanced autonomy partner, we are proud to be the first to deploy the Volvo VNL Autonomous across multiple states.”
In 2024, the companies revealed the Volvo VNL Autonomous, and integration of the Aurora Driver with the Volvo VNL began last year. The companies are in the final validation phase for driverless operations, and Volvo plans to build hundreds of the trucks next year at its New River Valley facility in Virginia.
