Clinton-based Metal Powder Works (MPW), a primary metal manufacturing company, and Australia-based K-Tig Advanced Welding Systems, an automated welding technology company, have merged.

The combined company will operate under the Metal Powder Works name.

K-Tig’s international distribution network includes a demonstration facility in the Pittsburgh region. The company was born out of Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) where MPW CEO John Barnes was High Performance Metals program director from 2011 to 2015. Barnes’ tenure supported the early development of K-Tig’s technology and the commercialization of many advanced manufacturing solutions.

“Our motto when I was at CSIRO was ‘ore to more’ and this new MPW is definitely more,” Barnes said. “This merger just makes sense when considering the demand for unique manufacturing solutions. Whether it be an expanded portfolio of metal alloys offered by MPW, or automated welding solutions provided by K-Tig, the advanced manufacturing industry is looking for these types of products to stay competitive in the global market.”

Founded in 2017, Metal Powder Works developed the DirectPowder process that produces metal powder more productively and cost effectively. The process, that went on the market in 2022, can be used to produce high-yield metal powders out of a variety of alloys.
