Altair Engineering, a computational science and artificial intelligence firm, recently honored Pittsburgh-based PPG and Toyota North America with a 2024 Altair Enlighten runner-up award in the Sustainable Process category.

The award recognizes sustainability and lightweighting advancements in the automotive industry. The companies were recognized for the use of PPG ENVIRO-PRIME EPIC 200X electrocoat at Toyota’s automotive manufacturing plant in Canada.

The electrocoat reduces environmental impact through lower material usage and energy requirements, and enhances corrosion protection.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada’s North Plant in Cambridge, Ontario, implemented PPG Enviro-Prime EPIC 200X electrocoat last year. The switch has allowed the facility to reduce the amount of product applied by 0.6 kilograms per vehicle, reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3,500 metric tons annually, save 5.6 million kilowatt hours of energy annually, and save 1.8 million gallons of water annually.

“We collaborate closely with customers such as Toyota to ensure our products meet their performance expectations while delivering real-world sustainability and productivity advantages,” Andrew Carroll, PPG vice president, Americas, Automotive OEM Coatings, said.

The American Chemistry Council also has honored PPG Enviro-Prime EPIC 300 electrocoat. It presented the company with the 2024 Sustainability Leadership Award in May in the Product Safety, Innovation and Transparency category.
