Cranberry Township-based Westinghouse Electric Co. and its construction partner Bechtel recently submitted a proposal to supply the Czech Republic with up to four Westinghouse AP1000 reactors.

The AP1000 is a Generation III+ reactor with fully passive safety systems, a modular construction design and the smallest footprint per megawatts electric available.

The bid proposes constructing one AP1000 unit at the Dukovany nuclear site with the potential for a second unit and two units at the Temelin site.

“Westinghouse first partnered with the Czech Republic on nuclear energy three decades ago and we are proud and excited to be able to further honor that commitment by providing safe, reliable nuclear energy from our proven AP1000 technology,” David Durham, Westinghouse energy systems president, said. “Together we can lay the foundation for a clean, secure energy future that extends for the next 80 years of operation, and beyond.”

In 1993, Westinghouse supplied advanced instrumentation and control systems to the Temelin plant.

The company will supply nuclear fuel to both the Dukovany and Temelin nuclear sites beginning next year.

An AP1000 unit began operation earlier this year Georgia.

In China, four reactors are operational and six are under construction with two more planned.
