Pittsburgh-based PPG and NRG Energy’s Direct Energy brand recently agreed to reduce the carbon footprint of 62 PPG PAINTS stores and four PPG paints and coatings manufacturing facilities in Texas.

Under the agreement, which includes approximately 126,000 megawatt hours, PPG’s facilities and stores will purchase Renewable Energy Certificates generated by a wind facility located in Crockett County, Texas.

“PPG has a strong history of focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy sourcing, which has resulted in a 17 percent reduction in absolute GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions since 2017 – but we know we must strive for more,” Diane Kappas, PPG vice president of global sustainability, said. “As a result, we are continuing to make significant strides toward our renewable energy strategy and furthering our climate mitigation impact across our value chain.”

The agreement will reduce PPG’s total greenhouse gas by an estimated more than 9,400 metric tons annually, according the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s greenhouse gas equivalencies calculator. This is the equivalent of powering 2,092 traditional combustion engine vehicles driving 11,000 miles for one year.

PPG previously signed a power purchase agreement with energy firm Constellation for PPG’s Adrian, Mich., facility.

Also as part of an agreement with Constellation, PPG’s Carrollton, Texas, facility is powered with solar energy.
