United States Steel Corp. (U. S. Steel) recently released its 2022 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report that reaffirms its commitment to sustainable steelmaking and a greener economy.
“2022 was a crucial year in putting our ambitious ESG initiatives into action,” Richard L. Fruehauf, U. S. Steel’s chief strategy and sustainability officer, said. “Strategy and sustainability are inextricably linked. Our Best for All strategy recognizes that what is good for the planet is also good for business, as we focus on producing profitable, sustainable steel solutions.”
Report highlights include:
U. S. Steel launched an electrical steel product, InduX, that will begin production at the company’s Big River Steel plant this summer. The product will help the company meet the rising demand for electric vehicles and more efficient motors.
The Big River Steel facility also produces verdeX, U. S. Steel’s line of green steel. It is manufactured with up to 80 percent fewer emissions than traditional, integrated-mill steel and has a recycled content of up to 90 percent.
The Big River Steel mills received the first ResponsibleSteel site certification for a North American steel facility.
The company surpassed by approximately 130 percent a $300 million spending goal on diverse suppliers.
