Nearly all nursing facilities in Pennsylvania have open direct care positions, according to a recent Pennsylvania Health Care Association (PHCA) report.
The report is based on results from a survey of members. The report focuses on Pennsylvania’s nursing facilities.
“It is clear our access to care crisis will not go away until our workforce crisis is first addressed,” said Zach Shamberg, PHCA president and CEO. “While concerns and challenges remain, our survey also highlights the steps taken by providers to help meet care demands and serve their communities. But more must be done, and our elected officials and regulatory agencies can help support those efforts.”
A total of 31 percent of respondents had 21 or more open positions.
More than half of facilities, 57 percent, have beds they cannot use because they do not have enough caregivers to staff those beds.
Nearly one-quarter have between 21 percent and 40 percent of beds available due to insufficient staff.
PHCA is a statewide advocacy organization representing more than 400 long-term care and senior service providers.
A second report focusing on the state of assisted living communities and personal care homes will be released later this year.
