Pittsburgh-based Alcoa was recognized as an industry leader in the 2022 S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), a list of companies from around the world with strong environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance.
Alcoa, included in the indices since 1999, received an ESG score from the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment in the 96th percentile. The score puts the company in the top tier of its industry peer group.
The assessment evaluated more than 13,000 global companies.
“Alcoa’s continuous recognition via the DJSI indices affirms the important work we do to embed sustainability across our business and operations, beginning with responsible mining and active engagement with our communities,” said Sonya Elam Harden, Alcoa executive vice president and chief external affairs officer. “At Alcoa, sustainability is one of our strategic priorities, and we have a vision to reinvent the aluminum industry.”
The company’s goal is to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Alcoa is a member of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, a third-party system to verify responsible production practices, contributes to global sustainability initiatives via the International Council on Mining and Metals, and worked with the International Aluminium Institute and Mission Possible Partnership on a Sector Transition Strategy for potential decarbonization in the aluminum sector.
