Two United States Steel Corp. (U.S. Steel) facilities recently earned the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) 45001 certification more than a year ahead of the company’s commitment to achieving the latest global occupational health and safety accreditation.
The certification focuses on process over procedures. This incorporates the viewpoints of all safety stakeholders, enables continuous safety improvement, and addresses workers’ physical, psychological, and cognitive conditions to minimize the risk of injury or death.
In its 2021 Sustainability Report, U.S. Steel committed to achieving the certification for all facilities by 2024. This recent certification is for Great Lakes Works, located in River Rouge and Ecorse, Mich., and U.S. Steel Košice, located in Slovakia.
“The phrase ‘Safety First’ originated in our steel mills in 1908, and sending our employees back home to their families safely each and every day has always been our most important priority,” David B. Burritt, U.S. Steel president and CEO, said during remarks at the ResponsibleSteel Forum III event in Memphis. “In order to achieve our Best for All strategy, we need the best from all, and with the enhanced structure and data that ISO 45001 brings to our existing, industry-leading best practices, we will be better able to deliver on our commitment to 360° Safety.”
