PPL Electric Utilities, based in Allentown, announced it has won two Industry Excellence Awards from Southeastern Electric Exchange, a nationally recognized nonprofit association of investor-owned utilities.

PPL was recognized for its excellence in employee safety processes and supply chain management. The awards were presented a S.E.E.’s annual conference on June 29.

“Safety is a core value for PPL Electric. And despite having the two safest years in its history in 2017 and 2018, the company continued to look for ways to increase overall safety within the organization. This led to the development of a safety-focused leadership training program that provides mentoring skills and a forum to discuss all aspects of safety incidents, regardless of whether they resulted in injuries,” the company said in a statement.

The company found that engaged leaders help reduce safety incidents by passing knowledge on to less experienced and new employees. In addition to introducing the new safety leadership program, the company created a process for discussing safety incidents and launched learning sessions addressing key safety topics.

The company was also recognized for supply chain management innovation in its supply chain organization. PPL’s supply chain organization took over the delivery and storage of steel structures in 2020, which helped reduce costs by 40 percent and increased reliability and service for customers. Before the change, the company relied on third-party vendors. The switch to storing steel structures within its service area has led to quicker delivery when there is an immediate need, the company said.
