The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) recently approved Yardley-based Crown Holdings’ greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Approval means the targets are consistent with the Paris Agreement’s goal of keeping warming to 1.5°C.
Using 2019 as a baseline, the company has committed to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50 percent by 2030. It also committed to reducing Scope 3 GHG emissions by 16 percent during the same timeframe.
Crown’s emission reduction targets are part of its recently released sustainability strategy. The strategy outlines goals for the next decade regarding environmental, social and governance.
“As a company, we are taking serious, deliberate steps to accelerate our sustainability commitments,” Timothy J. Donahue, Crown president and CEO, said. “Receiving approval on our emission reduction objectives from the Science Based Targets initiative serves as a major proof point that we are on the right track. We are proud to secure this distinction, which is only held by seven other companies in the global containers and packaging sector, and be part of an elite group of organizations fighting against climate change.”
SBTi sets and independently assesses companies’ goals. It encourages setting targets as a way to transition to a low-carbon economy.
