The application period for rental and utility assistance in Allegheny County has opened and runs through Sept. 30.
Funding is through the county’s CARES Rent Relief Program, which was created in May. The Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency administers the program, and the county manages it.
Renters must have a household income at or below the area median income and must document at least a 30 percent reduction in income or unemployment after Feb. 29. The income reduction or job loss must be because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Renters qualify for up to $750 monthly for a maximum of six months of assistance or $4,500.
Landlords who have lost rental income because a renter experienced income reduction or job loss also can apply for assistance. To qualify, landlords must agree to forego any additional rent or fees owed, must be fully paid on real estate taxes, must attest that property meets housing quality standards, and must agree to not pursue eviction action 60 days after assistance provided.
In addition, the county is providing $200 monthly for a maximum of six months for renters’ late fees, gas, electric, internet, and court costs.
The county is projected to receive $22.5 million in funding for the program.
