Chewy, an online distributor of pet products, plans to spend up to $35 million to expand its operations in Lackawanna County.

The company is looking to open a 1 million-square-foot fulfillment and distribution center, which will be the company’s third Pennsylvania location.

Chewy will lease a property located in the Valley View Business Park for 10 years. The mixed-use business park is a portion of a 1,300-acre development project created by The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce.

Over the next three years, 2,401 existing jobs will be retained.

“We’re thrilled to continue our growth in Pennsylvania with the opening of Chewy’s third fulfillment center in the state and tenth in the country,” Pete Krilles, Chewy vice president of Corporate Real Estate and Facilities, said. “The launch of this new location will create 1,000 new, full-time jobs, deepening our economic investment in the northeast Pennsylvania region. In addition, it will further extend our delivery network across the Northeast and Midwest, enhancing the customer experience by providing even faster order delivery times.”

The project has the support of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and was coordinated by the Governor’s Action Team and the Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce.

Chewy is co-headquartered in Florida and Massachusetts.
