Supermarket News, a retail food industry trade publication, recently named GIANT Food Stores its 2019 Retailer of the Year.

The annual award honors grocery chains for outstanding performance.

GIANT was recognized for an aggressive, multipronged growth strategy that included an e-commerce hub, fuel stations, relocated or remolded stores, and store acquisitions. The retailer offers an enhanced loyalty program, uses robust merchandising initiatives, and has deployed robotics chain-wide.

GIANT stands as an example to its peers, Supermarket News said.

“Being named the 2019 Retailer of the Year by Supermarket News is a tremendous honor and is a pinnacle moment in our 96-year story,” GIANT President Nicholas Bertram said. “I’d like to congratulate and thank our team of more than 32,000 talented and caring associates, along with our amazing partners across Ahold Delhaize, who support our brand every day by helping us be who we are. Customers are at the heart of everything we do and serving their families remains our inspiration as we look toward the future.”

Supermarket News also highlighted GIANT’s online grocery services offering and the launch of GIANT Heirloom Market in Philadelphia.

GIANT has more than 180 stores, 132 pharmacies, and 102 fuel stations.
