Gov. Tom Wolf announced Tuesday the approval of a $99,000 grant awarded to the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce to fund apprenticeships programs for three Hanover area companies.
The grants will help Elsner Engineering Works, KLK Welding, and Utz Quality Foods fill the need for skilled workers for manufacturing positions that require specialized knowledge.
“In order to move our manufacturing sector to the next level, it is essential that our employers find skilled workers to fill their needs,” Wolf said. “These new apprenticeship programs are a great example of government, business and organizations working together to strengthen our manufacturing sector and provide job seekers with paid on-the-job training in industries where employers are eager to hire highly skilled workers.”
The grant will help the companies to implement its apprenticeship programs to fill the need for skilled machinists, welders, and industrial maintenance mechanics. The three employers expect to turn over 45 percent of their skilled workforce over the next eight years.
“We appreciate Governor Wolf’s support of the Hanover Chamber Group Apprenticeship program,” Gary Laird, president of the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, said. “Our goal is to address local workforce needs by developing a talent pipeline model to fill high demand occupations in any industry.”
Apprenticeships are a vital component of Wolf’s PAsmart initiative, which is working on expanding apprenticeships and job training through the Apprenticeship Training Office (ATO). The initiative has also expanded the Department of Labor and Industry’s Industry Partnerships program, which connects businesses with educational and economic development partners to provide job training.
