GIANT Food Stores recently agreed to purchase Musser’s Markets for an undisclosed amount. Musser’s has three locations in Pennsylvania – Columbia, Lebanon, and Quarryville.
The Musser family decided to sell its business and approached GIANT because it felt the company was a good fit for Musser’s Markets’ employees, customers, and locations.
“Due to the changes in the industry, the loss of our cooperative wholesaler (AWI), customer buying habits, online pressure and competition in the Lancaster and Lebanon counties, it has become clear that the only way we can continue to service our customers and give our employees better opportunities is to provide a company that can meet these new needs,” The Musser Family wrote on the business’ Facebook page Sunday.
The Mussers thanked their employees and customers and commended GIANT for its willingness and commitment.
The deal is expected to close in October. Once finalized, the three stores will close for a week for remodeling. Musser’s employees will be given the opportunity to interview with GIANT.
GIANT will release additional details shortly.
GIANT was founded in Carlisle in 1923. The retailer has 181 stores in four states, the majority in Pennsylvania and employs approximately 29,000 in the state.
