Between 2016 and 2018, AT&T invested more than $775 million in Pennsylvania’s wireless and wired networks, according to the company, and also improved services supporting the FirstNet communications platform.
More than 3,300 wireless network upgrades were made last year alone and included new wireless high-speed Internet connections, new cell sites, and additional network capacity. This will boost coverage, speed, reliability, and overall performance.
Upgrades will also allow local networks to serve as the foundation 5G, the Internet of Things, smart cities, and other technologies. It will also help the company meet the growing demand for mobile broadband.
“We’re investing in our network to make business growth possible; keep our commonwealth competitive; and provide our residents and visitors with the tools to stay connected and entertained,” AT&T Pennsylvania President David Kerr said.
AT&T is committed to working with government officials to develop policies that increase the installation of mobile broadband equipment called small cells, Kerr said.
The First Responder Network Authority is an independent agency within the federal government and a public-private partnership with AT&T. The FirstNet platform is used by first responders and is deployed in more than 600 markets nationwide.
Pennsylvania markets include Allentown, Erie, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Reading, Union, and York.
