Vision Solar, a Philadelphia-based renewable energy company, is expanding and opening a Reading location.

The company is investing $500,000 in the expansion and has hired more than 30 employees. It is also expanding into Edison, N.J.

Vision Solar installs solar panels on homes in Pennsylvania and New Jersey and commercial buildings nationwide.

“Vision Solar is proud to announce two new locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey,” Mike Eden, Vision Solar chief security officer, said. “Vision Solar has always shown deep commitment to local communities and this expansion effort will provide us with additional opportunities to serve the residents of these areas even better than before. What’s a better way to give back to the community than serving the people and protecting the environment?”

Pennsylvanians pay slightly higher than the national average for energy, according to Solar Nation, but the state ranks in the top 20 for solar energy.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, Pennsylvania ranks 22nd with 0.24 percent of electricity generated from solar power. In the commonwealth, it takes 12 years for a solar system to pay for itself.

There are 559 solar companies in the state, employing 4,219, and 51,684 homes have solar panels installed.
