The Education and Labor Committee announced Tuesday that Rep. Lloyd Smucker (R-PA) will serve as the Republican Leader of the House Education and Labor Committee’s Higher Education and Workforce Investment Subcommittee for the 116th Congress.

“Improving college affordability, expanding apprenticeships and strengthening career and technical education are all ways we can help people achieve the American dream,” Smucker said. “This committee’s work has a huge impact on so many people in our country – and I’m eager to get to work and help Americans learn the skills needed to succeed in life.”

The Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment focuses on education and labor development beyond the high school level, including postsecondary education, technical education, and apprenticeship programs. The subcommittee also deals with campus safety issues.

“Rep. Smucker is a dedicated public servant and a valued and respected member of the committee,” Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), the Republican leader of the House Education and Labor Committee, said. “I am delighted that he will lead Republican members of the Subcommittee on Higher Education and Workforce Investment in the 116th Congress, and know that he will do an excellent job as Republicans continue our efforts to align postsecondary and skills-based education with in-demand jobs.”

Rep. Susan Davis (D-CA) serves as the Democratic subcommittee chair.
