The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded the Port of Philadelphia (PhilaPort) a $79.7 million Clean Ports Program grant.
The program funds zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure, and climate and air quality planning at ports.
The port will use the funding to replace older, diesel-powered equipment with advanced zero-emission alternatives and to purchase an electric rail switcher to replace an existing diesel model. Equipment includes electric ship-to-shore cranes, forklifts, yard tractors, and charging infrastructure to support the technology.
“We are extremely pleased to be selected by the EPA as a partner in this historic investment in port infrastructure and zero-emission port equipment,” Jeff Theobald, PhilaPort executive director and CEO, said. “This funding will not only help us modernize our equipment but also reinforce our dedication to creating a greener, more sustainable port. We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and contributing to the health and well-being of our community.”
Replacing the equipment is part of the port’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Its recently released PhilaPort Strategic Plan – Destination 2040 emphasizes a strong commitment to environmental sustainability over the next 15 years.
PhilaPort manages, maintains, markets, and promotes publicly-owned port facilities along the Delaware River in Philadelphia.
